Dr. Andrea Margarita Rivas Castillo holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco, and a PhD in Experimental Biology from the Universidad de Guanajuato. She has completed two postdoctoral research appointments: the first at the University of Florida/Kennedy Space Center in the field of Astrobiology, and the second at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in the area of Biotechnology.
Her work focuses on the transdisciplinary application of knowledge within the field of Environmental Biotechnology, integrating tools and approaches from Microbiology, Bioprocess Engineering, Molecular Biology, and Systems Biology. She is currently involved in projects related to water treatment and omics-based studies aimed at understanding microbial communities in contaminated environments, with the goal of developing innovative biotechnological applications.
Additionally, she has developed bioprocesses for the removal of contaminants—such as heavy metals—and for the production of industrially relevant metabolites, including polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). She has also led and participated in projects focused on soil analysis and the stimulation of agricultural crops.
Dr. Rivas Castillo currently holds four patent applications and one granted patent, has published 26 scientific articles and 8 book chapters, and has supervised more than 30 degree projects, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She has over 20 years of teaching experience, has trained in current omics approaches, and holds a certification in the establishment of innovation ecosystems and the management of high-impact projects. |
