The work of Joaquín Salas aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to No Poverty (1), Zero Hunger (2), and Climate Action (13).
Joaquín Salas holds a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from ITESM (1989), a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Cinvestav (1991), and a PhD in Computer Science from ITESM (1996). From 2010 to 2011, he was a Fulbright Scholar at Duke University. He has completed sabbatical stays at UAQ (2014–2015) and at the Computer Vision Center (Spain, 2005–2006).
He has also served as a visiting professor at Xerox PARC (2002), Oregon State University (2001), and the Computer Vision Center (2000). Between 1993 and 1996, he was a visiting scholar at Stanford University, and from 1990 to 1991 at the Escuela Nacional Superior de Telecomunicaciones in Brest (France).
He served as Director of CICATA Querétaro of the IPN, a role for which he received the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the IPN, conferred by the President of Mexico. He is a Level III researcher of the SNII (2025–2029).
His research interests include computer vision—a field in which he has authored a textbook—and pattern recognition. He has published more than 60 articles in international journals and specialized conferences.
He has served as a reviewer for conferences including Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, International Conference on Robotics and Automation, and International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications, as well as for journals such as the Journal of Electronic Imaging, Pattern Analysis and Applications, Pattern Recognition Letters, and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He has also co-organized the Mexican Conference on Pattern Recognition.
Additionally, he has been a guest editor for the journal Pattern Recognition (Elsevier) and a co-editor of volumes in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. He has served as principal investigator on national research projects funded by CONACYT, as well as on international projects supported by CONACYT, MIT, and the University of California. Joaquín Salas carried out foundational work, together with other stakeholders, that eventually led to the creation of the CONACYT Graduate Programs with Industry. He also founded the Laboratorio de Sistemas Autónomos Ligeros, the first FabLab of the IPN.
