Biotecnology The Biotechnology area carries out research activities and postgraduate-level training of scientists in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, food chemistry, and toxicology.
Most of its projects receive support from the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) or from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) itself. Other projects are substantially funded by companies with a direct interest in the issues being addressed.
In general, these projects are aimed at solving challenges present in our social and commercial environment. These include the detection and assessment of chemical contamination in different environments and the development of remediation methods; the evaluation of the effects of harmful contaminants on the health status of the local population; the development of procedures to enhance and ensure the quality of food inputs for consumers; the creation of molecular diagnostics for the detection of infectious organisms; and the optimization of enzymatic processes with potential bioindustrial applications.
The unifying theme of this research area is the application and development of modern biological, biochemical, and chemical methods to address current and emerging problems. |
